On Vancouver Island's northwest coast, the town of Zeballos is a deep-sea port surrounded by rugged mountains and forests. Originally the home of the Ehattesaht First Nations, Spanish gold-seekers began to arrive in the 1700s.
Sea otters were hunted for their fur and also drew explorers to Kyuquot Sound between 1741 and 1911. The discovery of gold in the 1920¹s resulted in a massive influx of miners and adventurers. Today logging and ecotourism is the mainstay of the Zeballos economy.
