Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the audience? Youth between the ages of 9 and 19 can enjoy Reel 2 Real with their families, caregivers, and teachers.

Why was Reel 2 Real chosen for the name? The name Reel 2 Real was chosen because we believe film viewing is an active experience. After screenings, youth are engaged in hands-on filmmaking activities and discussions with film directors. These interactive experiences enrich Festival audiences with critical viewing skills and a "behind-the-scenes" understanding of the art and craft of filmmaking. Our Youth Advisory Board chose the name.

Dates + Venues The 2009 Festival will be February 20-27 at the Roundhouse Community Centre and Vancity Theatre at the Vancouver International Film Centre

BOX OFFICE - How do I get a ticket? Schools can make reservations beginning in January 2008. For information on the school program, call our Education Director from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, Monday to Friday, at 604-224-6162. Tickets can also be purchased online, at the theatre on the day of the screening, or by mail before February 8.

Who programs Reel 2 Real? Venay Felton has been the Festival Programmer since 1999. Her background is in film and art education. She works with a selection committee composed of parents, educators, filmmakers, and a Youth Advisory Board.

What kind of films are selected? We select both Canadian and international films, including live action dramas, documentaries, and animated features and shorts. The films must be of high quality and entertaining to a youth audience.

What ages will the films be appropriate for? Saturday's Films 4 Families is aimed at 9-19 year-olds. Age recommendations are in our program guide. The School Program is for students in Grades 5-12.

How will I know which films are appropriate? Beside each film is indicated the age group or grade level for which the film is intended.

How will you handle subtitles for younger children? For some festival screenings there will be a reader at the non-English language films who will read the subtitles to the audience. This is practiced at many other festivals around the world and has proven to be very successful. Subtitles will also be read at some of the school screenings. Please refer to individual films in the program guide.

Will the films be introduced? All the films will be introduced either by REEL 2 REAL Director Venay Felton, the director of the film, or another appropriate person who is related to the film.

“It was different from being just a passive viewer... [T]he result is that we’ll watch movies and TV differently, based on what we’ve learned. In a world dominated by the media, it’s an important skill to be able to... look at these images more critically.”
