Behind the Scenes Expo 2019

The Behind the Scenes Expo is Vancouver’s only film industry job fair for youth. Meet industry professionals who can help you pursue your career in fashion, drawing, photography, sound design, filmmaking, writing, computer programming or video games.

This event is for school groups and is available by pre-registration only. The Youth Media Conference is a full day comprehensive program from 10:30AM – 2:30PM and is open to the public from 3:00PM- 4:00PM.

Expo Participants 

Animation and VFX Companies and Studios

DHX Media is an animation company. Past production partners include: Disney, Cartoon Network, and Teletoon. Credits: Planet X, Hasbro’s My Little Pony, Littlest Pet Shop.

Zoic Studios is a VFX company based in Vancouver and California. Its work includes: film, advertising, video games in design, animation, and production management.

Double Negative is an Academy Award®-winning VFX company. Credits: Inception, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Interstellar, Avengers: Infinity War, and Wonder Woman.

Animal Logic has attracted audiences with their visual effects and animation in films like Moulin Rouge, House of Flying Daggers, 300, The Great Gatsby, Happy Feet, Legend of the Guardians, and The LEGO® Movie.

Sony Pictures Imageworks an Academy Award®-winning VFX and animation unit of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group.Credits: Alice Through The Looking Glass, and many more.

Jake Collinge is an Illustrator and Concept Artist with experience in games, TV animation, feature films and print design. Credits: The Adventures of Puss and BootsRatchet and Clank, and the Addams Family.

Method Studios is an award-winning international visual effects group. Credits: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur.

Creative BC provides expertise and business support to strengthen BC’s motion picture, interactive digital, music and publishing sectors. They aim to facilitate seamless client service from initial script to screen-ready media.

Post Secondary Education & Resources

Vancouver Film School (VFS) offers an immersive curriculum in film, animation, video game production, VR/AR development, interactive design, programming, and other related programs.

Theatre and Film at UBC offers a comprehensive range of degrees and includes the option to study in an interdisciplinary environment with Creative Writing and other university disciplines.

Simon Fraser University offers a film program which combines rigorous technical training and skills development with extensive instruction in cinema studies and history.

 

Vancouver Institute of Media Arts offers a variety of one-year diploma programs in Character Animation, Web Development & Design, Web/Radio/TV Broadcasting and Acting for Film & Television.

InFocus Film School is an independent film school with intensive programs in dramatic and documentary film, visual effects, compositing, and screenwriting for film and TV.

 

Vancouver Public Library has an Inspiration Lab which is an open access media lab dedicated to digital creativity, collaboration, and storytelling with high-performance computers.

Capilano University’s School of Motion Picture Arts offers a variety of programs, including one or two year certificates and diplomas in Motion Picture Arts, Digital Visual Effects and many more.

Guilds and Unions

IATSE Local 669 is the International Cinematographers Guild of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. Membership consists of Directors of Photography, Camera Operators, Camera Assistants, Unit Still Photographers, Electronic Camera people, Video Assist, Digital Engineers and Technicians, and many more.

IATSE Local 891 consists of artists, technicians, and craftspeople who work primarily in film and television production in BC. The entertainment trades and crafts represented are: Costume, Editing, Greens, Grips, Hair, Lighting / Electrics, Make-Up, Painting, Production Office, Props, Script Supervisors / Continuity Coordinator, Set Decorating, Sound, Special Effects, and Visual Effects.

 

The Directors Guild of Canada, B.C. District Council (DGC BC) represents the creative and logistical personnel in the film and television industry in British Columbia. The DGC BC Collective Agreement covers the categories of Director, 2nd Unit Director, Production & Unit Manager, plus those employed in the various Assistant Director and Locations Departments.
