Elementary Programs

Reel Focus consists of five short film programs. Study guides assist teachers in preparing their class for post film discussion and activities which help tie it to the curriculum.

Feature Focus promotes an in-depth development of media literacy and critical thinking skills, while broadening cultural awareness and global understanding. Feature films may be followed by a Q&A and viewing guides for classroom integration.

High School Programs

Talent Lab allows students to learn about films and cultures from around the world. These short & feature films are followed by a Q&A and film study guides are provided to the teachers.

In the Youth Filmmakers Showcase, students watch amazing short films made by young people across British Columbia

R2R: Note on COVID-19

Reel 2 Real cares about the health and safety of students, teachers, and festival attendees. We are listening to the concerns of the community and participating school boards, and prioritizing guidance from the Public Health Agency of Canada, HealthLink BC and BC...

“The Reel 2 Real International Youth Jury is an opportunity to see film through a new lens. You are exposed to movies you wouldn’t otherwise see: foreign, local, feature, and short. By watching with a critical eye and discussing with fellow jury members, film takes on a whole new dimension.”

Saskia Vaisey,
Grade 11

“It was different from being just a passive viewer… [T]he result is that we’ll watch movies and TV differently, based on what we’ve learned. In a world dominated by the media, it’s an important skill to be able to… look at these images more critically.”

Adriana Byrne,
Grade 11

“I [was] continually blown away by the number of talented film makers from across the globe that submitted their films to the festival… I hope that film makers keep remembering the youth as an important and influential audience in the future.”

Yasmin Kassam,
Grade 11
