Heidi is a beloved and best-selling book, written by Johanna Spyri in 1880. 11 year-old Heidi is an orphan, who is cared for by her Aunt Dete. When her aunt gets a job in Frankfurt, Heidi is taken to live with her mysterious grandfather in the Swiss Alps. She becomes friends with a young boy, Peter, and loves to go up the mountain with him and his goats. Then one day, she is whisked away by her aunt to a posh house in the city. A term of Heidi’s lodging and education is that she is expected to provide companionship to Klara, the lonely, wheelchair-bound daughter of a well-to-do family. The two girls soon become friends, and Klara’s grandmother awakens Heidi’s passion for reading. However, Heidi becomes homesick for the freedom of the mountains and her grandfather.
